Former Gopher Whalen Wins WNBA Peak Performer Award

Former Minnesota Gopher Lindsay Whalen has been named as a recipient to the WNBA's 2008 Peak Perfomer award by leading the league in assists this past season.

Whalen joins the league's leading scorer Diana Taurasi and leading rebounder Candace Parker on the Peak Performer award list. Each recipient of the award will be given a Tiffany trophy to honor their accomplishments.

Whalen led the league with 5.4 apg for the Connecticut Sun, tallying 106 assists overall for the season. For her career, Whalen has dished out a franchise record 808 assists. This past season, Lindsay finished the season with 19 games in which she totaled five or more assists.

Adding another record this season, Whalen became only the second player in league history to average over 10 points, five or more rebounds, and five or more assists in a season. Lindsay finished the year averaging 14.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg, and 5.4 apg.

This evening Whalen's Connecticut Sun take on another former Gopher Janel McCarville and the New York Liberty in the first round of the WNBA playoffs at 7:00 p.m. EST. and can be seen on NBA TV.

Whalen (2000-04) finished her career as the Golden Gophers' all-time leading scorer (2,285 points) and as a three-time first-team All-American. She put the finishing touches on a brilliant collegiate career by guiding the Gophers to the 2004 Final Four.
