Minnesota Volleyball Defeats TCU in Four Sets in Gopher Invitational

The eighth-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (9-1) won its sixth straight match, as it defeated TCU (10-2) by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 25-14 on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Sports Pavilion.
Minnesota’s win capped an event-filled night at the Sports Pavilion. Prior to the match, the Golden Gophers honored the USA Men’s Volleyball Olympic Gold Medal Coach Hugh McCutcheon. McCutcheon addressed the crowd after being honored. Minnesota also once again honored its 2008 “M” Club Hall of Fame inductees in between sets two and three.
Earlier in the day, North Carolina defeated Winthrop in four sets by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 17-25, 25-21.
“From a spectator’s point of view, people might have thought we had an off night,” said Minnesota Head Coach Mike Hebert. “However, I thought TCU was a very good team who played us very tough tonight. I thought our left side and Lauren Gibbemeyer did a great job offensively tonight. I think their performances really opened up opportunities for each other, and made it hard to key on any single option for TCU.”
Minnesota was led by Sophomore Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.), who hit .565 (15-2-23) with 15 kills, three blocks and two service aces. Senior Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) hit .395 (19-4-38) with 19 kills and two blocks. Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) finished the night hitting .323 (14-4-31) with 14 kills and two blocks.
Junior libero Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) finished with a match-high 17 digs, while Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) had a career-high 13 digs and a service ace on the night. Senior setter Rachel Hartmann (St. Charles, Ill.) had 48 assists, eight digs and two blocks. Pam Luiz (Limeira, Brazil) finished with eight kills and eight digs for the Golden Gophers.
As a team, Minnesota outhit TCU .288 to .163, and had 59 kills to 47 for the Horned Frogs. The Golden Gophers also outblocked TCU 7.0-to-3.0 on the night, and had 59 digs to 47 for the Horned Frogs. Minnesota has outblocked every team it has faced this year.
TCU jumped out to a 5-4 lead in the first set, but Minnesota scored the next three points to move ahead 7-5. The Horned Frogs responded with four consecutive points to take a 9-7 lead. Schmidt and Dieter followed with back-to-back kills, and the Golden Gophers took an 11-9 lead when Luiz delivered a kill and Granquist followed with a service ace.
The Horned Frogs responded with three of the next four points to tie the set at 12. Minnesota answered by running off three straight points, and moved ahead 15-12 on a solo block by Roehrig. TCU trimmed the lead to two points at 16-14, but the Golden Gophers responded with four straight points and took 20-14 lead on a kill by Dieter. TCU scored five of the next seven points to cut the Minnesota lead to 22-19.
Roehrig halted the Horned Frogs momentum with a kill to make it 23-19. After the Horned Frogs cut it to 23-20, Gibbemeyer delivered a kill to make it set point at 24-20. Minnesota claimed the set on a TCU ballhandling error.
The Golden Gophers outhit TCU .424 to .226 in the first set, and had 17 kills to 13. Roehrig, Luiz and Dieter all had four kills in the first set.

After an attack error by TCU, Roehrig delivered a kill to make it 23-13. That capped off a run where Minnesota scored nine of 13 points against the Horned Frogs. TCU cut the lead to 23-14, but Gibbemeyer delivered a kill to make it match point. Hartmann and Gibbemeyer combined on a block to give Minnesota the victory.
TCU was led by Lauren Otto who had 15 kills and seven digs, while Irene Hester had eight kills and 10 digs. Katelyn Blackwood finished with a team-high 16 digs. The Horned Frogs five service aces were the most against the Golden Gophers this season.
Minnesota will also face Winthrop on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 12:30 p.m., and North Carolina on Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. North Carolina will also face TCU on Sept. 20 at 10 a.m., and Winthrop will face TCU at 5 p.m.
