The University of Minnesota women’s soccer team (10-1-0) suffered its first loss of the 2008 season by a 2-0 score at the hands of Michigan State (9-1-0) Friday afternoon in East Lansing. Michigan State scored both its goals in the second half.

Minnesota was able to control play for almost the entire first half, but was unable to find the back of the net for the first time this season. The Gophers were stymied by Michigan State keeper Lindsey Wrege, who recorded four saves for the shutout.

The Gophers played solid defense in the first half, holding the Spartans without a shot and gaining a 7-0 shot advantage at the halftime break. Minnesota has held its opponent to fewer than five shots on goal in all 11 matches this season.

Michigan State’s Lauren Hill scored the first goal of the match in the 49th minute. Lauren Heyboer scored her Big Ten-leading 10th goal of the season for the final tally of the match in the 71st minute.

The Gophers will play their second match of the Big Ten slate when they meet Michigan (3-4-2) for a Noon (CT) contest Sunday in Ann Arbor.
