Minnesota juniors Chris Rombough and R.J. McGinnis swept the Big Ten Athlete of the Week awards this week after top performances at the Jack Johnson Classic last weekend. Rombough is the Track Athlete of the Week, while McGinnis was tabbed the Field Event Athlete of the Week. The Golden Gophers have collected at least one honor in each of the first three weeks of their indoor track season.
Rombough ran the fastest time in school history in winning the 3,000-meter run. The time of 8 minutes, 0.66 seconds is an NCAA provisional qualifier and the top time in the country this season. Rombough is the defending Big Ten champion in the 10,000 meters.
McGinnis posted a score of 5,511 points in the heptathlon at the meet, also a mark that tops the nation. The score is the fifth-best in Gopher history and an NCAA provisional qualifier. McGinnis won four of the seven heptathlon events: the 60-meter dash, the 60-meter high hurdles, the long jump and the shot put.
The Gophers travel to the Nebraska adidias Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday.
