Team Notes
• This was the 66th meeting between Minnesota and Purdue. Minnesota leads the series 33-30-3, but has only won three of the last 11 meetings with the Boilermakers.
• Today’s game is the sixth game overall and the fourth home game of the 126th season of football for the University of Minnesota. The Gophers’ all-time record stands at 638-458-44.
• After today’s match-up, Minnesota posts a 54-33-3 record for Homecoming games and a 6-3 record when playing against Purdue in the Homecoming game.
• The Gophers have a 7-3 record in their last 10 Homecoming competitions, but have not taken home a victory since 2006.
• This is the first time this season, and the second time under Head Coach Tim Brewster, that the Minnesota offense ended the game with more rushing yards (207) than passing yards (74). The last time this happened, was on October 25, 2008 against Purdue where the Gophers won 17-6.
• With the win today, it is the fourth time this season Minnesota has fought back from a deficit to add a victory.
Individual Notes
• Decker extended his consecutive games with a reception streak to 31 games. His 47-yard reception in the second quarter was his (and the Gophers’) second-longest reception of the season. It was also his fifth catch of over 30 yards this season. He finished with three catches for 50 yards.
• Adam Weber moved up to second (past Cory Sauter, 1994-97 – 6,834 yards) on the career passing yardage list in the second quarter on a 47-yard pass to Eric Decker. Weber has 6,880 career passing yards with Bryan Cupito (2003-2006) next on the list at No. 1 (7,446 yards).
• Weber scored his first rushing TD of the season, and 10th of his career, when he ran for 2 yards into the endzone to make the score 21-13.
• Punter Blake Haudan has a career total of 19 punts. Of these, eight have been downed inside the 20.
• DeLeon Eskridge had his second rushing TD of the season in the second quarter to put the Gophers on the board, making it his first since Minnesota played against Air Force on September 12th. He had a third TD of the season on a run in the second quarter to help the Gophers take the lead and bring his career total to 10.
• Eskridge scored his two touchdowns within less than two minutes in the third quarter. This was his third career game with two rushing touchdowns (first two were in the 2008 season).
• Linebacker Lee Campbell’s interception with 5:14 left in the second quarter was his first of the season and third of his career. He returned it for 32 yards to set up Minnesota’s second touchdown of the game.
• At the beginning of the third quarter, Keanon Cooper sacked QB Joey Elliott for his first career sack. He went on to force a third quarter fumble (also the first of his career). The fumble was recovered at the Purdue 31 by defensive back Brian Klitzke.
• Kevin Whaley posted his first career touchdown with 10:10 on the clock in the third quarter. His third carry, to the 1-yard line, helped set up the touchdown to make the score.
• Today’s game is the first time this season that the Gophers have scored four rushing touchdowns in a single game this season. The last time Minnesota hit this mark was September 13, 2008 where they hailed a victory of 35-23 over Montana State. The last time this was achieved in a Big Ten faceoff was against Iowa on November 14, 2006, where Minnesota won 63-26.
• The blocked field goal by Lee Campbell in the third quarter was returned for a 47-yard touchdown by Traye Simmons, increasing his career touchdown tally to two. He also scored on a 23-yard interception return November 1, 2008 vs. Northwestern. Simmons also tallied his first interception of the season, fifth of his career, when he picked off a pass by Elliott and ran it for a 37-yard return.
• This was the first time since 1989 (October 21, 1989 vs. Indiana) that a blocked field goal was returned for a touchdown by the Gophers and was the first Gopher special teams’ touchdown since a kickoff return by Jay Thomas vs. Florida Atlantic on September 15, 2007.
• The last time a field goal was blocked was when Willie VanDeSteeg blocked a Montana State kick on September 13, 2008.
• The 21 points scored in the third quarter this game is more than the number of points scored in all other games this season combined. The last time 21 points were scored in a single quarter was on September 6, 2008 where the game ended in a 42-17 win against Bowling Green. Earlier this season in the game against Air Force, Minnesota scored 17 points in the fourth quarter.
