Koprivica Wins Twice at Northwestern Invite

Tijana Koprivica posted a pair of singles victories to lead Minnesota at the Northwestern women's tennis invitational over the weekend.

Poor weather forced most of the competition indoors and the final matches in each of the singles and doubles flights were not played.

Koprivica won her first match over Marie-Pier Huet of Oklahoma 6-2, 6-3 before a 6-4, 6-4 setback to Stacey Lee of Northwestern. She concluded the tournament by defeating Angelina Jogasuria of Akron 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Also in Flight A, Alessandra Ferrazzi lost her first match to Katya Mirnova of Wisconsin 7-5, 6-4, but rallied to beat Teona Tsertsvadze of Oklahoma 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 before losing a three-set match to Angelika Jogasuria of Akron 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

In Flight B, Alexa Palen came back to win her opening match over Katelyn Connelly of Oklahoma 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, but then lost to Elena Chernyakova of Northwestern 6-2, 6-1 and Selma Salkovic of DePaul 7-5, 7-5.

Magdalena Wiecha dropped her opener to Kate Turvy of Northwestern 6-3, 6-3 before defeating Anya Baronayte of Akron 7-5, 6-2. She lost her second consolation match to Gia McKnight of DePaul 6-3, 7-5.

Jackie Sperling lost her flight C opener to Madelein Saari-Bystrom of South Carolina 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, but took a match tiebreaker in a consolation victory over Jeremie Benjamin of Akron 4-6, 6-1, (10-6). She dropped her second consolation contest to Kirsten Gambrell of DePaul 6-1, 6-4.

Peta Forsyth went 0-3 in singles, falling to Linda Abu Mushrefova of Northwestern 6-4, 6-2, Rita Maisak of South Carolina 6-2, 7-5 and Rachel Denny of Western Michigan 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, Wiecha and Forsyth combined for two wins in Flight B as they opened with an 8-3 win over Nicole Herzog and Whitney Wilson of Michigan State. After an 8-6 quarterfinal loss to Tsertsvadze and Kristina Radan of Oklahoma, the pair rallied for an 8-4 consolation match win over Maggie Remynse and April Kerr of Western Michigan.

The Gophers' two doubles teams in Flight A both finished with one win in three matches. Koprivica and Sperling lost their opener to Ana Marija Zubori and Dijana Stojic of South Carolina 8-6, but bounced back for an 8-4 victory over Christine McGaffigan and Kristen Rafael of Notre Dame before losing to Angelika Jogasuria and Baronayte of Akron 8-4. Alessandra Ferrazzi and Alexa Palen lost to the nation's 35th-ranked pair, Samantha Murray and Lauren Lui of Northwestern, 8-2 in the first round and then fell to Ana Redesci and McKnight of DePaul 8-3. They bounced back to beat Amy Barton and Elena Ivanova of Michigan State 8-4.
