ITA Central Regional Set for This Weekend

Six Minnesota women's tennis players will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region championships this weekend in Norman, Okla.

The event will feature the top players from over 20 Divison I schools, including six teams that finished in the ITA top 75 in 2008-2009. The winners earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Nov. 5-8 in New Haven, Conn.

Peta Forsyth will compete in the qualifying rounds on Wed., Oct. 21, while the other five Gopher competitors are already in the main draw, which starts the following day. Tijana Koprivica, Alessandra Ferrazzi, Alex Palen, Magdalena Wiecha and Jackie Sperling all earned automatic spots in the main bracket.

Koprivica leads the team with a 7-4 singles record this fall, while Ferrazzi is 6-4. The pair will also compete in doubles and have combined for a 4-3 record this season. The other two doubles teams are first-time pairings with Palen teaming with Wiecha and Sperling playing with Forsyth. All three doubles teams are in the main draw.

Qualifying rounds for singles and doubles will begin Wednesday at 9 a.m. Eight individuals from the qualifying rounds will advance to the main draw. The main draw competition will begin Thursday at 9 a.m., with the first two rounds of doubles and singles. The doubles and singles finals will be held on Sunday.
