Minnesota Defeats Purdue in Three Sets

The Minnesota volleyball team (12-3, 3-0) defeated Purdue (9-6, 1-3) in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 26-24 at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility on Friday, Oct. 2.
With the win, Minnesota started out 3-0 in Big Ten play for the third year in row. The Golden Gophers have won all nine sets they have played in Big Ten play this year.
It was also Minnesota's eighth straight win against the Boilermakers. Minnesota has won 15 of the last 16 sets against Purdue.
Minnesota was led by Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) who hit .909 (10-0-11) with 10 kills on the match. The .909 hitting percentage was tied for the second-best in school history in a single match, and was the highest since Jessy Jones hit .909 against Houston on Sept. 9, 2005.
Junior outside hitter Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) had 12 kills, seven digs and hit .343 (12-0-35). Freshman Tabitha Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) had nine kills, while Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) finished with eight kills and four blocks.
Senior setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had 38 assists, three blocks and four digs, while Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) finished with a team-high 13 digs, while Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) had eight digs and two assists.
Minnesota outhit Purdue .321 (48-13-109) to .151 (41-23-119), and had 48 kills to 41 for the Boilermakers. The Golden Gophers outblocked Purdue 5.0-to-4.0. It marked the 14th match in a row that Minnesota has outblocked its opposition.
Purdue jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before Minnesota answered with six of the next seven points and went ahead 6-4 on a kill by Carico. The Golden Gophers expanded the lead to 13-9 on a kill by Katherine Harms (Albertville, Minn.). The Boilermakers cut the lead to 13-11, before Minnesota went on a 4-0 run and took a 17-11 lead on a kill by Dieter.
The Boilermakers answered with five of the next seven points to cut the lead to 19-16, but Love answered with consecutive kills to make it 21-16. With the score at 22-18, the Golden Gophers scored back-to-back points and made it set point at 24-18 on a service ace by Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie, Minn.). Minnesota closed out the set at 25-18 on a Purdue attack error.
Minnesota outhit Purdue .367 (14-3-30) to .057 (11-9-35), and had 14 kills to 11. Gibbemeyer led the way with four kills in the set.
With the score tied at six in the second set, Minnesota surged ahead with five of the next six points and moved ahead 11-7 when Gibbemeyer and Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) combined on a block. The Golden Gophers pushed the lead to 15-9 on a kill by Dieter. The Boilermakers answered with six of the next seven points to cut the lead to 16-14.
Minnesota expanded on a 19-17 lead with consecutive points to move ahead 21-17. Purdue answered with four straight points to tie the set at 21. Dieter answered with consecutive kills, and Gibbemeyer made it set point at 24-21. After Purdue cut the lead to 24-22, Dieter delivered a backrow kill to close out the set at 25-22.
The Golden Gohpers outhit Purdue .310 (18-5-42) to .190 (14-6-42), and had 18 kills to 14. Dieter led the way with six kills and four digs, while Filho and Love each had four kills.
Minnesota jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the third set after a kill by Wilson. Gibbemeyer put the Golden Gophers up 16-12, Purdue scored five of the next six points to cut the lead to 17-16. Purdue came back to take its first lead of the set at 20-19. Minnesota tied the score at 21 on a kill by Dieter.
with the score tied at 22, Purdue score consecutive points to make it set point at 24-22. After a Purdue service error, Filho delivered a kill to tie the set at 24. The Boilermakers committed back-to-back attack errors, as Minnesota won the third set 26-24 to claim the match.
Purdue was led by Tiffany Fisher who had 11 kills, while Carrie Gurnell and Kristen Arthurs each had eight kills. Blair Bashen finished with a match-high 15 digs.
