Team Notes
• This was the 119th meeting between Minnesota and Wisconsin, the most-played series in NCAA FBS history. Minnesota leads the series 59-52-8, but has lost the last six and 13 of the last 15.
• Today’s game is the fifth game overall and the third home game of the 126th season of football for the University of Minnesota. The Gophers’ all-time record stands at 637-458-44.
Individual Notes
• Eric Decker set a Minnesota career receiving record with his eighth catch (18 yards) of the game and now has 3,000 career receiving yards. Decker passed Ron Johnson (1998-01 - 2,989 yards).
• Decker extended his consecutive games with a reception streak to 30 games. The streak is the sixth-longest in the nation. His 40-yard reception in the fourth quarter was his fourth catch of over 30 yards this season. Decker finished with eight catches and 140 receiving yards, his 11th 100-plus receiving yards game (fourth of season.
• Marcus Sherels set a Minnesota record with an 88-yard fumble return for a touchdown (63 yards, Tyrone Carter vs. Syracuse, ’96). It is the Gophers’ second fumble return (Nate Triplett vs. Air Force) for a TD in ‘09.
• Eric Small forced the Wisconsin fumble recovered by Sherels, his first of the season and second of career
• Adam Weber moved up to third (past Asad Abdul-Khaliq, 2000-03 – 6,668 yards) on the career passing yardage list in the second quarter on an 11-yard pass to Eric Decker in the second quarter. Weber has 6,806 career passing yards with Cory Sauter’s (1994-97) 6,834 next on the list at No. 2.
• Minnesota converted its first two-point conversion of the season on a Weber to Da’Jon McKnight reception.
• Duane Bennett scored on a 1-yard TD run to bring the Gophers to within 31-28 with 2:13 to play. The TD was Bennett’s fifth rushing TD of the season and 10th of his career.
• Decker caught an 11-yard TD in the first quarter, his 24th career TD catch of his career, fifth of the season. Decker ranks third in Minnesota history in TD receptions (No. 2 is 26 by Ernie Wheelwright, 2004-07).
• Weber collected his sixth touchdown pass (11-yarder to Decker in first quarter) of the season, with at least one TD pass in each game.
• Linebacker Nate Triplett grabbed his second interception of the season (and of his career) and returned it 25 yards to the Wisconsin 11-yard line and setting up a Gopher touchdown. Triplett added a fumble recovery, his second of the season, in the third quarter.
• Defensive tackle Garrett Brown forced the Wisconsin fumble in the third quarter, his first of the season, second of career.
• LB Lee Campbell tied his career high with 13 tackles, safety Kim Royston set a career best with 11 stops.
• Minnesota entered the game averaging 26.5 yards per kickoff return. Troy Stoudermire returned the game’s opening kickoff 41 yards. In the third quarter, he added a 38-yarder, his sixth return over 35 yards this season. Stoudermire entered the game ranked third in the Big Ten.
• Tight end Eric Lair – recorded his first career touch – a rush – in the first quarter. He eluded two Badgers for an 8-yard gain in the first quarter.
• With a 28-yard field goal with 2:54 left in the first quarter and a 20-yarder in the second quarter, Eric Ellestad improved to 7-of-8 on field goals this season and has booted six straight through the uprights. Ellestad’s only miss was a blocked field goal vs. Syracuse.
