Wisconsin Post-Game Notes
Wisconsin vs. Minnesota
Oct. 3, 2009
TCF Bank Stadium – Minneapolis, Minn.

Team Notes
•    With a 31-28 win over Minnesota, Wisconsin improved to 5-0 on the season. This is the second time the Badgers have opened the season with five consecutive wins under head coach Bret Bielema. It is also fifth time UW has began 5-0 in the last 10 seasons.
•    Wisconsin has now won six straight games over Minnesota and has won 12 of the last 14 meetings.
•    A week after scoring 21 points off Michigan State turnovers, Wisconsin scored 14 points off Minnesota turnovers, turning a first-quarter fumble recovery and third-quarter interception into seven points each.

Offensive Notes

•    Running back John Clay gained a career-high 184 yards on 32 carries, going over the 100-yard rushing plateau for the third time in five games. It was Clay’s sixth career 100-yard rushing game.
•    Clay scored a career-high three TDs, giving his 16 touchdowns in his career and seven this season. It was Clay’s third multi-TD game of the season and the fifth of his career.
•    Junior tight end Lance Kendricks caught his second career touchdown pass, making an acrobatic catch in the back of the end zone in the fourth quarter.
•    Junior quarterback Scott Tolzien has thrown at least one touchdown pass in each of the Badgers’ five games this season.
•    Freshman running back Montee Ball saw his first career action, carrying the ball four times for five yards.
•    Tight end Garrett Graham tied a career high with seven receptions. His previous career-high was seven catches in the 2008 Outback Bowl against Tennessee.
•    Wisconsin outrushed Minnesota by a 295 to 57 advantage.
•    The Badgers’ 295-yard rushing total is the team’s highest since rushing for 441 yards at Indiana Nov. 8, 2008.

Defensive Notes

•    Senior free safety Chris Maragos forced his second career fumble, knocking the ball away from Duane Bennett in the first quarter. Maragos is responsible for four turnovers this season (three interceptions and a forced fumble).
•    Sophomore cornerback Devin Smith recovered the second fumble of his career when he pounced on the ball after Maragos forced it. That led to Wisconsin’s first touchdown.
•    Defensive tackle Patrick Butrym recorded his first career interception, thwarting a Minnesota drive in the third quarter.
•    Wisconsin forced three Minnesota turnovers (2 fumbles, 1 interception), the fourth-consecutive game in which the Badgers have forced three of more turnovers.
•    Blake Sorensen sacked Minnesota QB Adam Weber on the Gophers’ final possession, forcing a game-clinching fumble in the process. That was Sorensen’s second-career sack and second of the season.
•    Freshman linebacker Chris Borland recorded his first career fumble recovery falling on the fumble forced by Sorensen.

Special Teams Notes
•    Junior David Gilreath moved into third place in Big Ten history in career kickoff returns, surpassing Minnesota’s Melvin Anderson (father of current Badger wide receiver Isaac Anderson). Gilreath also moved into fifth place in Big Ten history in career kickoff return yards, also passing Anderson. He now has 96 returns for 1,989 yards in his career.
