Minnesota Defeats Indiana in Three Sets

The Minnesota volleyball team (13-3, 4-0) defeated Indiana (12-5, 2-2) in three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 26-24 at University Gym in Bloomington on Sunday, Oct. 4.
With the win, Minnesota moved out to a 4-0 mark in Big Ten play to tie the Golden Gophers with Penn State for first place. It marks the third year in a row that Minnesota has started out 4-0 in conference play.
The Golden Gophers were led by Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) who hit .435 (13-3-23) with three blocks and two service aces. Junior outside hitter Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) had 14 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. It was the 14th time in 16 matches that Dieter has collected double-figure kills.
Senior libero Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) had a team-high 17 digs, while Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) had nine and seven digs respectively. Senior setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) finished with 32 assists, eight digs, three blocks and three kills.
Minnesota outhit Indiana .248 (42-14-113) to .150 (43-23-133), despite the fact that the Hoosiers had one more kill. The Golden Gophers also outblocked the Hoosiers 9.0-to-6.0. It marked the 15th straight match that Minnesota has outblocked its opposition. The Golden Gophers also had 58 digs to 53 for Indiana, and had four service aces (two service errors) to two (six service errors) for Indiana.
The Golden Gophers jumped out a 13-7 lead in the first set on a solo block by Carico. Indiana cut the lead to three points at 15-12, but Dieter and Love answered with consecutive kills. With the score at 18-14, a Hoosier service error was followed by a kill and solo block by Dieter to make it 21-14.
Minnesota moved ahead 23-17 after a kill by Gibbemeyer, but Indiana cut the lead to four points with consecutive points. Gibbmeyer made it set point at 24-19, and the Golden Gophers won the set 25-20 on a Jordan Haverly service error.
The Golden Gophers outhit Indiana .333 (14-5-27) to .184 (13-6-38) in the first set, and had 18 digs to eight. Individually, Gibbemeyer led the way hitting .750 (7-1-8) with seven kills in the set.
Minnesota ran out to a 10-6 lead on a kill by Tabitha Love (Dauphin, Manitoba). With the score at 15-11, the Golden Gophers scored four straight points to move ahead 19-11. After a service error by Indiana, Love and Gibbmeyer combined on a block. Carico and Love followed with consecutive kills.
Gibbemeyer pushed Minnesota ahead 21-12 with a service ace. Indiana scored six of the next eight points to cut the Golden Gopher lead to 23-18. Dieter delivered a kill to make it set point at 24-18. The Hoosiers fought off set point, but Dieter delivered a kill to give Minnesota the second set 25-19.
