Senior libero Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 5. It marked the ninth Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor she has collected in her career, and the second this season.
Tan averaged 5.00 dps, received 38 serves perfectly and helped the Golden Gophers limit opponents to a .151 hitting percentage. She has 13 digs and was perfect on 24 serve receive opportunities against Purdue, and collected 17 digs along with receiving 14 serves perfectly against Indiana. Minnesota won both matches in three sets on the road to move into a tie with Penn State for first place at 4-0.
On the season, Tan became the fourth Big Ten player to claim multiple weekly honors this year. She joins Penn State's Arielle Wilson (two-time Player of the Week), Indiana's Jordan Haverly (two-time Freshman of the Week) and Penn State's Darcy Dorton (two-time Freshman of the Week) on that list.
With her ninth weekly honor from the Big Ten, Tan moved into second on the conference's all-time list behind Ohio State's Stacey Gordon (2001-04), who won 16 Big Ten weekly honors during her career.
Tan enters the week sixth in the Big Ten in digs at 3.91 dps and is third in serve-receive percentage at .970.
