Junior middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) was named Big Ten Co-Player of the week with Penn State's Blair Brown on Monday, Nov. 16. She joins Tabitha Love as one of two Golden Gophers to claim the weekly honors this year.
With Gibbemeyer's honors, Minnesota becomes only the second team in the conference to have multiple Players of the Week this season. The Golden Gophers join Penn State, who has had five different players collect the honors this year, on that list.
This past week, Gibbemeyer averaged 4.00 kps, 2.50 blps, 1.17 dps and hit .426 to help Minnesota post a pair of road sweeps over Iowa and Wisconsin. Gibbemeyer hit .364 with 10 kills and three blocks in the victory over Iowa. She also collected her 1,000th career kill in the first set of the match. Against Wisconsin, Gibbemeyer had a team-high 14 kills, a career-high 12 blocks, tied with a team-best six digs and hit .480 for the match. The 12 blocks tied the fourth-highest single-match total in school history.
It marked the second time Gibbemeyer has collected Player of the Week honors in her career. The last time came on Sept. 15, 2008, when she claimed the honors and was also named AVCA National Player of the Week during the same span.
