Minnesota Defeats Indiana in Three Sets

The Minnesota volleyball team (18-7, 9-4) defeated Indiana (14-13, 3-11) in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-13, 25-15 at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday, Nov. 6. With the win, the Golden Gophers moved to 9-1 in home matches this year.
Minnesota was led by Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) who hit .632 (12-0-19) with 12 kills, four blocks and two assists. Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie, Minn.) hit .409 (10-1-22) with 10 kills, 12 digs and two blocks. Senior setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) also had six kills, 37 assists and 10 digs on the night.
Sophomore Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) finished with a match-high 13 digs and had an assist, while Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) had nine digs, two service aces and two blocks. Ariana Filho also collected seven kills and hit .455 (7-2-11).
Minnesota outhit Indiana .435 to .091, and had 47 kills to 30. The .435 hitting percentage was the highest by the Golden Gophers in a Big Ten match since they hit .430 against Purdue on Nov. 24, 2006. Minnesota also had 54 digs to 35 by Indiana, and had six blocks to three for the Hoosiers.
Minnesota jumped out to an early 9-5 lead in the first set after a kill by Filho. With the score at 13-8, the Golden Gophers scored three of the next four points and took a 16-9 lead on a kill by Carico. The Hoosiers scored the next two points to cut it to 16-11, but Minnesota answered with seven of the next eight points and took a 23-12 lead when Filho and Cowles combined on a block.
The Golden Gophers moved it to set point after an attack error by Indiana made it 24-14. After a Hoosier point, Gibbemeyer put the set away with kill to give Minnesota a 25-15 victory in the first set.
Minnesota outhit Indiana .366 to .087 in the first set, and had 17 kills to 11 for the Hoosiers. Gibbemeyer had four kills in seven swings, while Filho and Love also collected four kills in the set. Cowles and Carico each collected seven digs.
In the second set, the Golden Gophers jumped out to a 4-2 lead, but Indiana answered with six straight points to take an 8-4 lead. Minnesota answered with six of the next nine points and cut the Hoosier lead to 11-10 when Gibbemeyer and Wilson combined on a block.
Indiana pushed its lead to 12-10, but the Minnesota responded in a big way with 15 of the final 16 points to claim the second set at 25-13. From the point that the score was 12-11, the Golden Gophers went on a 10-0 run and took a 21-12 lead on a kill by Cowles. Indiana made it 21-13, but Cowles and Carico followed with consecutive kills to make it 23-13. After a Hoosier attack error, Gibbemeyer delivered a kill to give Minnesota the second set 25-13.
The Golden Gophers outhit Indiana .619 (14-1-21) to .062 (10-8-32) in the set, and had 14 kills to 10. Minnesota also outblocked the Hoosiers 3.0-to-0.0 in the set. Gibbemeyer finished the set with five kills in seven swings.

Indiana was led by Kelsey Hall who had eight kills and seven digs. Ashley Benson and Jordan Haverly each had six kills, while Caitlin Cox finished with 10 digs.
In between sets one and two, Minnesota recognized last year's two Golden Gopher Volleyball Olympians Lindsey Berg and Nicole Branagh.
Minnesota will be back in action when it hosts Purdue on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. That match can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
