Kansas City, Kans. - The University of Minnesota soccer team was recently honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for their academic achievement.

As a team, the Gophers posted a grade point average of 3.37, earning them a spot among the winners of the 2009 NSCAA College Team Academic Award. Minnesota is one of 327 women's soccer teams, from across all levels of college soccer, to receive the honor.

This is the third straight time, and fifth overall, that the Gophers have won the NSCAA College Team Academic Award in head coach Mikki Denney Wright's six season's. The Gophers also won the award in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008.

Minnesota is one of seven Big Ten teams on the list of winners, and their 3.37 grade point average ranks second among those teams. Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue also represent the Big Ten.

Already this postseason, junior Kylie Kallman (Woodbury, Minn.) was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District first team. She was one of six Gophers to return this season who earned Academic All-Big Ten in 2008, with the 2009 Big Ten All-Academic team set to come out later this month.

The Gophers ended the 2009 season with a 12-5-3 record and a 5-3-2 record in the Big Ten.
