Minnesota struggled offensively all night in dropping a 66-45 decision to No. 22 Maryland in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge in College Park, Md., on Tuesday. Jackie Voigt led the Golden Gophers with 10 points.
Minnesota shot just 27.1 percent in the game making some late baskets to improve that number a bit near the end of the game. Other than the first three minutes of the game, where the Gophers sprinted out to a 7-0 lead, the game was controlled by the Terps. The game was tied at 16-16, when Maryland used a 10-0 run to take the momentum.
“We didn’t play poorly on defense,” said Gopher head coach Pam Borton. “We just couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the basket. It’s frustrating.”
Despite the shooting percentage falling to 23 percent at the end of the first half, the Gophers were still in the game trailing by only nine points, 66-45, at halftime.
The Gophers edged to within eight points on an Ashley Ellis-Milan jumper with 18:07 left in the game, but the Terps extended the lead into double digits on their next possession and the deficit was never again in single figures.
Maryland’s lead swelled to 24 points late.
Minnesota opens Big Ten play on Sunday when the Gophers host Penn State at 3 p.m. at Williams Arena.
