Gopher junior Alicia Rue cleared 14-feet in the pole vault for the second time this season in winning the title in the event in the Iowa State Classic on Friday. Rue bested 14 feet, 1 inch to collect her fourth crown this season.

Minnesota’s young sprinters chipped in an impressive outing in the 200-meter dash. Freshman Nyoka Giles clocked a personal best time of 24.44 seconds, despite suffering from a slight illness, to finish third. The time is the third-fastest in Gopher history. Another rookie, Adrienne Thomas ran a time of 24.93 seconds good the eighth-best mark in school history.

“We had quite a few PRs today especially in the 200 meters so it was a good day for us,” said Golden Gopher head coach Matt Bingle. “Tomorrow will be a big day. Hopefully we can carry the momentum from today into tomorrow and finish off the meet well.”

Christin Kingsley added a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 19-3 1/2. Kari Schmidt placed 13th in the weight throw but landed a personal best and the No. 10 mark in school history with a throw of 53-10 1/4.

The Iowa State Classic concludes on Saturday. Several Gophers will also compete on Saturday at the UW-River Falls Classic.
