The No. 1 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team scored a goal in the first, three in the second and one in the third for a 5-0 shutout win over North Dakota, this afternoon at Ridder Arena. The Golden Gophers improve their record to 26-3-3 overall and 21-2-3 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. North Dakota, who is ranked fifth in the league, drops to 13-15-4 overall and 9-14-3 in league action.
Jocelyne Lamoureux got the Gophers on the board at 11:38 in the first period. Lamoureux attempted a shot and it went off a North Dakota defender as she scored her 23rd goal of the season. Monique Lamoureux and Melanie Gagnon tallied the assists. Although the Gophers fired off 15 shots, they found the back of the net just once in the period. North Dakota, who had its first shot on goal midway through the period, ended the stanza with five shots.
The Gophers continued to pour on the pressure, scoring three additional goals in the second period. Sarah Erickson scored on her own rebound attempt at 2:37 in the second, while Brittany Francis had the single assist. Jocelyne Lamoureux scored a short-handed goal at 6:00 in the second. She netted her second goal of the game when she added a rebound attempt off of sister Monique Lamoureux’s initial shot. Kelly Seeler started the play and wound up a slapshot, which was blocked and picked up by Lamoureux. Emily West added her 16th goal of the season at 19:11 in the second period when she scored on a breakaway. West beat the corner of the UND defender and placed the puck through the five-hole of North Dakota goalie Stephanie Ney. Jen Schoullis fed West the puck to earn the first assist, while Gigi Marvin tallied the second. With her goal, West has now tallied a point in 18-straight games.
Like the first period, Minnesota rifled off 16 shots and allowed only seven to UND after two periods. By the end of the second, the Gophers had 31 shots on goal to UND’s 12.
For the second time in two games, North Dakota pulled its goalie to add an extra attacker after Minnesota was called with a high-sticking penalty. The attempt, however, back-fired as Marvin scored an empty-net goal at 19:41 for the 5-0 final. Dagney Willey shot the puck up along the boards and Marvin deked out her opponents en route to her 21st goal of the season.
Minnesota finished the game with 44 shots on goal, while allowing 16 to UND. On the penalty kill, the Gophers allowed only two shots when short-handed.
Jenny Lura added her second shutout of the season when she stopped all 16 shots on goal. With the win, Lura improves her record to 13-1-1 this season.
