Minnesota head football coach Tim Brewster announced the hiring of Richard Hightower as the Golden Gophers’ new wide receivers coach Tuesday.

Hightower has spent the last four seasons on the coaching staff of the NFL’s Houston Texans. He played college football at the University of Texas.

“I’m very pleased to add Richard Hightower to our staff,” Brewster said. “He’s a young man who I’ve known quite some time, going back to when he played at Texas. Richard has developed into an outstanding football coach. His experience as an assistant coach with the Houston Texans will be invaluable to him as he joins our staff. Richard is going to help our wide receivers be the best they can be.”

For the past two seasons, Hightower has been a special teams assistant for the Texans. For the two seasons prior to being named special teams assistant, Hightower served as a coaching administrative coordinator. In that role, he worked closely with the defensive backs coach and the special teams.

Hightower was a member of the Texas Longhorns from 1999-2002. He played in 33 games at Texas, recording 22 total tackles. He played defensive back, wide receiver and also saw a great deal of action on special teams. Hightower also earned three letters during his Longhorn career. After walking on to the Texas squad, he earned a scholarship during his senior season.

Hightower is a native of Houston, Texas. He is a 1998 graduate of MacArthur High School.
