The Western Collegiate Hockey Association has announced that freshman defenseman Kelly Seeler (Eden Prairie, Minn.) has been named the conference’s defensive player of the week after her three-point performance against North Dakota last weekend. It is the first defensive honor for the Gophers and the 13th weekly award for a Minnesota Golden Gopher.
Defenseman Kelly Seeler, a freshman from Eden Prairie, Minn., scored two goals and added an assist in Minnesota’s two-game WCHA sweep over visiting North Dakota. Seeler scored a career-high two goals in the Golden Gophers’ 4-1 win last Friday (Feb. 13) and helped key a defensive corps that limited UND to just 18 shots on goal and blanked them on all six of their power-play chances. Seeler then followed Friday’s performance when she assisted on teammate Jocelyne Lamoureux’s shorthanded goal at 6:00 of the second period as Minnesota skated to a 5-0 victory over the Sioux while again holding them scoreless in five power-play opportunities and to just 16 shots on goal. In addition to her three scoring points in the series, Seeler tied for the team-best +3 rating and put five shots on goal from her blueline position. Overall this season, Seeler holds a +30, ranking second among defensemen, and has produced 12 points on five goals and seven assists. She has played in 31 of No. 1-ranked Minnesota’s 32 games.
Seeler and the rest of the Golden Gophers will look to win the WCHA regular season championship this weekend during a home-and-home game against St. Cloud State. Friday’s game is set for 7:07 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Saturday’s game is also at 7:07 p.m. at Ridder Arena. The Gophers hold a one-point lead in the WCHA standings. If the Gophers win, they become the regular season champions and hold the No. 1 seed for the post-season tournament.
