The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced that Minnesota freshman goaltender Alyssa Grogan has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. It is the first honor for Grogan this season and the team’s 14th weekly recognition this year.

Grogan, a freshman from Eagan, Minn., earned her third shutout of the season when she recorded a 7-0 conference road win over WCHA-rival St. Cloud State last Friday (Feb. 20) at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. With her shutout victory against SCSU, Grogan solidified her spot as the WCHA Goaltending Champion for the 2008-09 season with a final 1.37 goals-against average against league-member teams. The WCHA’s annual goaltending award is presented to the player with the best goals-against average in conference games and requires a minimum of 33% of a team’s minutes between the pipes. Grogan also collected her 13th win of the season when she had five saves in the first, nine in the second and four in the third for a total of 18. The No. 1-ranked Golden Gophers, meanwhile, went on to notch a 3-1 victory over the Huskies at home last Saturday, and coupled with Friday’s win at SCSU, gave them the 2009 WCHA regular season championship. Overall this season, Grogan sports a 13-1-2 record and .875 winning percentage (3rd, WCHA), a 1.25 goals-against average (1st, WCHA) and a .938 saves percentage (1st, WCHA). In WCHA play, she owned a 1.37 goals-against average (1st, WCHA), an 11-1-2 mark and .857 winning percentage (3rd, WCHA), and a .934 saves percentage (1st, WCHA). In the nation, Grogan currently ranks second in the GAA category behind Holy Cross’ Lindsay Atkinson, who holds a goals against average of 0.89. Grogan is second (1.25), followed by Wisconsin’s Jessie Vetter (1.34) and Gophers’ own Jenny Lura (1.58).

Grogan and the rest of the Golden Gophers will open their second season as they host Bemidiji State this weekend. In a best two-out-of-three series, Friday’s game is scheduled for 6:07 p.m., followed by 4:07 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday (if needed). If the Gophers get past the Beavers, Minnesota will advance to the WCHA FINAL FACEOFF next weekend, also at Ridder Arena.
