The University of Minnesota softball team suffered losses to a pair of highly-ranked foes on Friday at the DeMarini Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. Stanford, ranked 5th this week in the NFCA/USA Today poll, bested the Gophers by a 7-0 score in the opener, and Minnesota dropped the second game of the day by a 5-0 score to Nevada.

Briana Hassett (8-5) added to her Big Ten-leading strikeout total in spite of taking the loss in both contests. Through games played Friday, Hassett has 127 strikeouts in just 86.1 innings.

In the opener against the fifth-ranked Cardinal, the Gophers were stymied by Stanford starter Missey Penna, who improved her record to 10-1 by tossing a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts. Colleen Conway and Shannon Stemper collected Minnesota’s only two hits. Stanford third baseman Jenna Becerra hit a three-run home run to highlight a six-run first inning for the Cardinal. All three runs driven in by Becerra were unearned and gave Stanford a lead they would not relinquish.

In the second game of the day, Nevada topped the Gophers by a 5-0 score. First baseman Kelsey Starr provided all of the offense the Wolfpack needed, hitting two home runs and knocking in all five runs.

Freshman pitcher Alissa Koch was a bright spot for the Gophers on Friday, tossing six innings in relief and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out four.

The Gophers return to action Saturday when they face UC Riverside at 1:15 p.m. (CT), followed by a matchup against Cal State-Fullerton at 3:30 p.m. (CT). Minnesota concludes play at the DeMarini Invitational on Sunday morning when it takes on Oregon State.
