Kabia Sprints to Another Big Ten Weekly Honor

Minnesota’s Ibrahim Kabia worked hard during the off-season in hopes of making his senior season with the Golden Gophers his best. Kabia is seeing early rewards for his efforts as the All-American sprinter earned his second Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week award in the first month of the 2009 indoor track season.

Kabia won the 60-meter dash at the Nebraska Adidas Classic last Saturday. He posted a time of 6.65 seconds, his third NCAA provisional qualifier of the season. Kabia ran one tenth of a second faster (6.64) at the Minnesota Open on Jan. 17, as he toys with his own Minnesota record time of 6.63 seconds. That time, ironically, is also the NCAA automatic standard. Kabia also competed in the 200-meter dash at the Nebraska meet, finishing eighth with a time of 22.05 seconds.

The Gophers earned the Big Ten Athlete of the Week award five times in the month of January: two by Kabia, and ones by Chris Rombough, Ben Peterson and R.J. McGinnis.

Several of the Gophers’ top performers are idle this weekend, while Minnesota will send a contingent to the Bethel Open in St. Paul on Saturday.
