Hassett Gems Help Gophers Bounce Back
3/1/2009 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Briana Hassett tossed back-to-back complete game shutouts Saturday, helping Minnesota to wins over UC Riverside and Cal State-Fullerton by identical 3-0 scores at the DeMarini Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. Hassett struck out 14 UC Riverside hitters, and followed with eight more in a win over the host Titans, while allowing just seven total hits in the two contests.
With her fifth and sixth complete game shutouts of the season, Hassett improved her record to 10-5 and padded her Big Ten-leading strikeout total. The Eagan, Minn., native has now fanned 149 batters in just 100.1 innings this season.
Malisa Barnes was the spark for the Gophers at the plate in both contests. Barnes drove in Colleen Conway with an RBI double for the first of three sixth inning runs in the opener against UC Riverside. Barnes then turned in another multi-hit performance in the win over Fullerton, including an RBI single.
Conway had a hit and a run scored in each game. The senior third baseman has now hit safely in eight of the Gophers' last nine games and ran her hitting streak to a tournament-long four games.
The two Saturday wins helped the Gophers even their DeMarini Invitational record at 2-2, while their season mark stands at 10-10. Minnesota aims to finish the weekend with a winning record when it concludes play Sunday morning against Oregon State at 11:00 a.m. (CT).
