58 Athletes Named Academic All-Big Ten

The Big Ten Conference announced that 58 student-athletes from the University of Minnesota have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors during the winter season. Minnesota sports included in the winter were men's and women's basketball, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming and wrestling. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
Minnesota's women's swimming team had 17 members named to the All-Academic team highlighted by 2008 Olympian Jillian Tyler and Jenny Shaughnessy. Tyler finished second in the 100-breastroke and third in the 200-breastroke at the NCAA Championships, while Shaugnessy has collected 11 All-America honors in her career, will likely be a four-time CSCAA Academic All-American honoree and is a two-time Top V honoreer (for best top five GPA among Golden Gopher women student athletes.
The Golden Gophers men's swimming team collected 14 Big Ten All-Academic honors, highlighted by Stephen Miller and Nadav Kochavi. Miller was a two-time finalist in the Big Ten Championships this year, was part of the 200-medley relay team that won a Big Ten title and broke the school record and was also on the 200-free relay team that finished seventh in the NCAA Championships. Kochavi finished third in the 100-butterly at the Big Ten Championships, was part of the 200-medley relay team that broke the school record and won the Big Ten Championship and was on the 400-medley relay team that finished 13th in the NCAA Championships.
Men's Gymnastics had seven members named to the Big Ten All-Academic team, including Cole Storer. Storer was the 2008 runner-up in the High Bar, and currently has Minnesota's high scores in the Floor Exercise, High Bar and Vault.
Women's Gymnastics had five members named to the team, including Carmelina Carabajal. Carabajal won the Big Ten All-Around and Beam championships last week at the Big Ten Championships.
Wrestling had seven members named to the team, highlighted by Jayson Ness and Tyler Safratowich. Ness finished third in the nation in the 133-pound weight class, while Safratowich was eighth in the 157-pound weight class in last week's NCAA Championships.
Men's baskeball had three honorees, and was highlighted by Jamal Abu-Shamala who was named the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year in February, is three-time Big Ten All-Academic honoree and finished second on the school's all-time list in games played for Minnesota.
