Gophers Roll Past Nittany Lions 5-2

In its first home match since mid-February, Minnesota beat Penn State 5-2 on Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
Karina Chiarelli, Alex Seaton and Magdalena Wiecha all won in singles and doubles as the Gophers ran their record to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Penn State dropped to 3-11 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Chiarelli and Seaton started the match with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles before Tijana Koprivica and Niltooli Wilkins followed with an 8-4 victory at No. 2. Wiecha and Jackie Sperling were 8-5 victors at No. 3 to finish off a sweep of doubles for the Gophers.
Chiarelli and Wiecha both won singles matches in straight sets as Chiarelli posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Monika Mical at No. 1 and Wiecha was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Dorothy Dohanics at No. 5. Seaton played her first singles match since Feb. 15 and pulled out a super-tiebreaker win in the third set with a 6-3, 1-6, (10-7) win over Denisa Zobeideh at No. 3.
Peta Forsyth added a 6-0, 6-2 win over Leyla Morzan at No. 6 for the Gophers’ fourth singles win. Minnesota’s two losses both came in third-set super-tiebreakers as Koprivica fell to Lauren McCarthy 6-4, 0-6, (11-9) at No. 2 and Jackie Sperling lost to Michaela Stracar 6-4, 4-6, (10-4) at No. 5.
The Gophers play a second straight home match this weekend on Sunday against Ohio State at 11 a.m.
