Two Gophers Part of A-2 National Program

The Minnesota volleyball program will have two members representing it as part of the U.S. A-2 National program. Associate Head Coach Scott Swanson will be an assistant coach for the team, while Junior Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) will be one of the 24 players on the roster.

The 2009 U.S. Women’s National A2 program is scheduled to train May 18-22 in Minneapolis before being split into two 12-player rosters to compete in the Open Division of the 2009 USA Adult Open Championships. The Open Division flight takes place May 23-26 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Minnesota is the only college program to have reprsentation on the team from both a player and a coach. Swanson is joined on the staff by head coaches Suzie Fritz (Kansas State - Head Coach) and Jason Watson (Arizona State - Head Coach), along with assistant coach Aven Lee (Pacific - Assistant Coach).

Tan is one of four liberos who will be on the U.S. A-2 National program roster. She joins Haley Carroll (University of San Francisco), Ashley Edinger (University of Illinois) and Laura Gonzalez (University of Albany).

The players, all of whom have remaining collegiate eligibility for 2009, were selected as part of the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 20-22 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. A record total of 160 athletes competed in the Open Tryout.
