In the weeks leading up to spring football practice, GopherSports.com will be bringing you interviews with future Gophers who signed letters of intent earlier this year. Next up is Kendall Gregory-McGhee, a defensive end from Cherokee Trail High School in the Denver, Colorado area. GopherSports.com caught up to Gregory-McGhee on the phone last earlier this week. The following is a transcript of that interview:
GopherSports.com: Now that signing day is over and you’ve had some time to reflect, has it all sunk in that you’re officially a Golden Gopher?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “It feels great. I’ve always known I was going to play college football, I just didn’t know where. But I visited Minnesota and I really liked the Minnesota family.”
GopherSports.com: Talk about the recruiting process. What made you decide to come to Minnesota?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “When I went to Minnesota I was very impressed with the staff and their plans for the program. The players were just like me and I felt like it was a perfect fit.”
GopherSports.com: Your father played for Colorado and you have an uncle and grandfather who played at Nebraska. Did everyone just assume you’d go to a Big 12 school?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “Yeah, they did. Most people thought CU or Nebraska. CU has always been like my home school, but I decided on Minnesota.”
GopherSports.com: What was it like growing up in a football family like that?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “It was interesting. Football was always going on. I started playing football in 7th grade, like my dad. He didn’t want us to put our bodies through all of the stress before that. So football is still new to me.”
GopherSports.com: Do you play like any of your family members who were football players?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “I’m not sure. Some people say I play like my uncle and some say like I play like my dad on defense. Bits and pieces.”
GopherSports.com: What are your thoughts on TCF Bank Stadium?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “Its amazing. Right when I saw it I couldn’t help but think amazing.’”
GopherSports.com: Do you realize you’ll be part of the first class to play your entire Minnesota career at the new stadium?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “It means a lot to me, actually. My high school class is also the first to go all four years at our high school. Those are cool memories to have.”
GopherSports.com: What are your goals for your first season with the Gophers?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “To just get there in June and do whatever it takes to play and be where they need me to be.”
GopherSports.com: What are your long-term goals for your college career?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “I just want to get to that Rose Bowl and win it. Whatever happens with me, happens.”
GopherSports.com: What are you most looking forward to about getting to Minnesota this summer?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “I’m excited to be around the coaches, the system and the weight room. I’m just excited to start my college career.”
GopherSports.com: Are you playing basketball this season?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “I am a basketball captain and my basketball team just finished the league and we have our first round of playoffs soon. Our season has gone really well.”
GopherSports.com: Got plans for track and field again in the spring?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “I am doing the high jump, long jump and triple jump. I also run the 4x100 relay and 4x200 relay.”
GopherSports.com: What music are you listening to most right now?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “Mostly hip-hop ... Lil Wayne.”
GopherSports.com: Favorite movies?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “I have three. Ace Ventura, V for Vendetta and Anchor Man.”
GopherSports.com: What’s your favorite type of food?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “I love a lot of food. I like to go to this place called Pasta Jay’s, an Italian restaurant, with my family. I really like their Shrimp Alfredo.”
GopherSports.com: What’s “Cant Miss TV” for you?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “House.”
GopherSports.com: Do you have any hidden talents you will be bringing with you to Minnesota? Maybe something your teammates will be surprised to learn?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “I’ve been playing the saxophone for five years and I am learning to play the piano right now. Learning the notes from the sax makes learning how to play the piano a lot easier.”
GopherSports.com: Is there anything else you want to tell the fans in Minnesota?
Kendall Gregory-McGhee: “Everyone keeps telling me its cold in Minnesota. I just say, Watch me bring the heat.’”
