No. 11 'Cats Sweep Gophers
3/7/2009 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Minnesota sophomore Malisa Barnes homered in her first collegiate appearance in her home state of Arizona, but it wasn’t enough as Minnesota was swept by perennial power Arizona on Friday in Tucson. The No.11 Wildcats defeated the Gophers by scores of 10-4 and 20-3.
Barnes connected on an opposite field homer in the first inning of the Gophers’ loss in the nightcap against the Wildcats. Her RBI single in the first game knocked in the first run of the day. Barnes finished the day with three hits in six at-bats, raising her season average to .306.
In the first game of the day, the Wildcats touched Minnesota ace Briana Hassett (10-7) for eight hits and 10 earned runs. Although Hassett added to her Big Ten-leading strikeout total with five K’s, the Arizona offense was too much. Wildcats third baseman Jenae Lelas went 4-for-5 in the opener and finished the doubleheader with five hits in seven at-bats.
Minnesota jumped out to an early lead in the opening game. Following Barnes’ RBI single, Gopher catcher Shannon Stemper launched her second homer of the season to highlight a four-run top of the third inning, giving Minnesota a 4-0 lead.
In Game 2, Heidi Carls’ two-run double highlighted Minnesota’s offensive effort, along with Barnes’ solo homer. The home run for Barnes was her first of the season and third for the Gophers as a team this year.
Minnesota co-head coaches Lisa Bernstein and Julie Standering each coaching on the campus of their alma mater will coach in their 1,000th career contest at Minnesota tomorrow. The Gophers play a doubleheader with St. Joseph’s at Hillenbrand Stadium starting at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
