The Minnesota women’s track & field team has nine individuals and a relay awaiting final word of the field to compete in next weekend’s NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Championships, Saturday-Sunday, March 13-14, will be hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. The NCAA field will be announced on Monday.

The Golden Gophers’ Heather Dorniden and Alicia Rue have solidified berths in the NCAA field by notching automatic qualifying marks during the season. Dorniden has clocked automatic times in both the 800-meter run and the mile. Rue owns the nation’s top mark (14-4) in the pole vault.

The NCAA Indoor Championships will feature a field of 284 athletes. Monday’s announcement will fill the field with athletes who have hit provisional standards added to the automatic qualifiers.

The Gophers’ distance medley relay is expected to earn one of those at-large berths. The team of Gabriele Anderson, Jamie Cheever, Julie Schwengler and Dorniden would put a talented foursome on the track capable of earning All-America honors.

Anderson and Schwengler are among the Gophers who posted provisional marks in individual events during the season. Anderson earned qualifying standards in the mile and the 3,000-meter run, while Schwengler tabbed her qualifying time in the 800 meters.

Three other members of the Gophers’ middle distance/distance crew are among the provisional qualifiers: Amy Laskowske in the 5,000 meters, Elizabeth Yetzer in the mile and Nikki Swenson in the 800 meters and mile.

Two field event athletes, Christin Kingsley in the long jump and Samantha Sonnenberg in the pole vault, complete the list of Golden Gopher provisional qualifiers.

Minnesota tied for 15th at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
