Dalen Heroics Highlight Another Hassett Gem
3/9/2009 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Senior Katie Dalen came off the bench to deliver a game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Briana Hassett threw her ninth shutout of the young season as Minnesota (13-13) finished play at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., with a 1-0 victory against Creighton. With the win, the Golden Gophers finished the tournament with a record of 3-2.
Hassett permitted Creighton, the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference champion, just one hit in eight innings and did not allow a walk, while striking out 10. The shutout was the third consecutive such performance for Hassett (13-7).
Per international rules, each team started with a runner on second base in the extra frame after playing seven scoreless innings. Creighton successfully moved its runner to third base with a sacrifice bunt in the top of the eighth, but Hassett coaxed a popup and a groundout to keep the Bluejays off the scoreboard.
In the bottom half, Alissa Koch opened the inning with a sacrifice, moving runner Heidi Carls to third base with one out. Dalen then pinch hit for Dannie Skrove and delivered the game-winning hit for Minnesota, the first of the game off Creighton hurler Tara Oltman.
The Gophers return to action next weekend at the Courtyard by Marriot Cardinal Invitational, which is hosted by the University of Louisville. Minnesota gets its weekend underway on Friday evening, with a 6:00 p.m. (CT) contest against Eastern Michigan.
