The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team held its annual end-of-the-year banquet, tonight at the Town and Country Club in St. Paul, Minn. Along with recognizing the 2008-09 season, the Gopher women’s hockey staff announced the team awards, which were voted by the players and the coaching staff.
Gigi Marvin was named the team’s most valuable player for the third consecutive year. She joins former Gopher Bobbi Ross as the only two players to receive the award three times in her career. The 2008-09 campaign marked the second-straight year Marvin was named a Patty Kazmaier top-10 finalist. The senior captain scored 57 points this past season and 195 points in her career, ranking sixth in school history. Marvin ranked 10th in the nation in goals per game and was named a second-team All-WCHA honoree. During the Gophers’ NCAA post-season run, the Warroad, Minn., native led the team with four goals and two assists for six points, ranking second in NCAA action. In her final game, Marvin had a part in all four goals in the NCAA semifinal game against Mercyhurst.
The most improved award went to sophomore forward Terra Rasmussen. In her rookie year, Terra saw limited action and scored one goal. As a sophomore, she increased her ice time significantly in 39 games and improved her scoring abilities from one point to 10 this past year. The Coon Rapids, Minn., native scored seven goals for the Maroon and Gold, including a two-goal performance against Bemidji State and a goal in the WCHA Championship game against Wisconsin.
This year’s recipient of the team’s plus/minus award goes to the player who had the best on-ice rating of the season, Jocelyne Lamoureux. Ranking second on the team in scoring among a talented freshman class, Lamoureux netted 28 goals and 37 assists for 65 points in her rookie campaign. In 40 games played, Lamoureux solidified her award to put her at a +58 on the year. During the season, the Grand Forks, N.D. native held a season-best +6 in the January 17th game against Bemidji State.
The Highest GPA award also belonged to Marvin. In her past spring and fall semesters, the communications major had a 3.569 grade point average. For the third time in her career, Dagney Willey earned the Ridder Award, which is chosen by the Power Play Club in memory of Bob Ridder. The award is given to the player who has the biggest impact in the community by giving themselves through volunteer work and local outreach programs.
Emily West received this year’s Bonnie Olein Unsung Hero award. During her sophomore season, the Colorado Springs, Colo., native was fourth on the team in scoring with 19 goals and 21 assists for a career-best 40 points. While playing in 40 games this past year, West had seven multiple-point games, including a four-point performance against Niagara on January 4th. West held a team-best 19-game scoring streak this year.
Gopher senior Kim Hanlon was awarded the GWH Award, which is given to the player that best exemplifies the Gopher Women’s Hockey Creed. “I will represent myself, the team and the University of Minnesota with...class, integrity, honesty, dependability, responsibility, a positive attitude, an unselfish and “team-first” attitude, accountability, a strong work ethic, loyalty an appreciation for privileges and an awareness of my role as a member of Gopher Women’s Hockey.”
