Gopher football head coach Tim Brewster is passionate about charity work and working to improve the lives of others. He has passed much of that passion down to his student-athletes in his relatively short tenure at Minnesota.
There was further evidence of this Monday, when Brewster and five of his Gopher players took part in a charity fund-raising golf tournament for Children’s HeartLink. The 17th Annual HeartLinks Golf Invitational was held at Golden Valley Country Club.
Children’s HeartLink is based in Minneapolis and is a registered 501c(3) nonprofit organization, funded by private donations from corporations, foundations and individuals.
Coach Brewster had four of his captains -- defensive tackle Garrett Brown, linebacker Lee Campbell, wide receiver Eric Decker and quarterback Adam Weber with him at the event. The other Gopher player in attendance had a special reason to be involved. Sam Maresh, who had a well-publicized heart surgery roughly one year ago, was also invited to attend.
Coach Brewster and the Minnesota players enjoyed their time on the golf course. The Gopher group signed autographs, shook hands and socialized with others taking part in the tournament. But most importantly, they helped raise money for an amazing charity. Children’s HeartLink has been dedicated to the prevention and treatment of heart disease in the developing world for more than 40 years. Children’s HeartLink sends volunteer medical teams from around the world to partner sites to train, teach and perform life saving heart procedures on needy children.
It costs an average of $2,500 to save a life. It costs approximately $100,000/per year to support a partner hospital. Last year, Children’s HeartLink reached more than 100,000 children at its partner sites.
