Roehrig Seventh in Day One of USA Heptathlon

Minnesota’s Liz Roehrig is in seventh place with 3,546 points after the first day of the heptathlon at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. The heptathlon, as well as the Championships, concludes on Sunday.

Roehrig started the event with a career-best time of 13.98 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. She then cleared 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump before struggling in the shot put landing a throw of 39-9 3/4. Roehrig moved up to seventh in the overall standings by clocking a time of 24.41 seconds in the 200 meters to end the first day.

Hyleas Fountain leads the heptathlon with 4,038 points.

The second day features three events, the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.

Two more current Golden Gophers will compete in the Championships on Sunday, Alicia Rue in the pole vault and Aaron Stud in the shot put.

NBC will provide live coverage of the USA Championships on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. CT.
