Anissa Lightner, assistant director to Student-Athlete Welfare and the Life Skills, is the recipient of the 2009 University of Minnesota President's Award for Outstanding Service.

The President’s award was established in 1997 to recognize Minnesota faculty and staff who have provided exceptional service to the University. The award is presented each year in the spring and honors active or retired faculty or staff members who have gone well beyond their regular duties and have demonstrated an unusual commitment to the University community. This award recognizes exceptional service to the University, its schools, colleges, departments and service units by any active or retired member of the faculty or staff.

Lightner has been a member of the Gopher academic staff since March of 2001. The CHAMPS/Life Skills department focuses on five main areas: academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development, and community service. Lightner, along with Peyton Owens III and Rachel McKessock, aide Gopher student-athletes in community outreach programs, spreading diversity throughout the community and university settings and prepare student-athletes for life after graduation. In 2008-09, the Life Skills office reached out to over 250 various community projects throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

“I am so honored to be the recipient of this award," Lightner said. "It was such a surprise because I didn’t even know that I had been nominated. I feel really blessed to work with so many great staff and student-athletes here at the University of Minnesota. Thank you to everyone who has assisted me in my job, without their help and support I wouldn’t have been able to receive this award. I feel truly blessed.”
