Giles Takes Pan American Games Bronze Medal

Minnesota track athlete Nyoka Giles earned a bronze medal at the 2009 Pan American Games in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in early August. Giles anchored her native Trinidad & Tobago 4x100-meter relay to a third-place finish in a time of 45.38 seconds.

Giles, who will be a sophomore for the Golden Gophers in 2010, added a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.13 seconds.

Future Gopher Alena Brooks also competed for Trinidad & Tobago in the Games. Brooks finished seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.21. She clocked a faster time of 2:10.38 in the preliminary rounds. Brooks, who will be a freshman in 2010, also ran on the nation’s 4x400-meter relay.
