Liz Roehrig Wins Thorpe Cup Heptathlon

Former Golden Gopher All-American Liz Roehrig captured her first title at an international competition winning the heptathlon competition at the 2009 Thorpe Cup in Marburg, Germany, in early August. Roehrig, a five-time NCAA awardwinner and a seven-time Big Ten Conference multi-event champion, scored a personal-best tally of 5,990 points.
Roehrig, who finished second in both the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships, kicked off the heptathlon by running a time of 14.03 in the 100-meter hurdles. She cleared 6 feet in the high jump then landed a throw of 42-6 3/4 in the shot put. Roehrig ended the first day by clocking a time of 24.90 seconds in the 200-meter dash to lead the competition with 3,611 points.
Roehrig continued to perform well in day two, starting with a leap of 20-1 in the long jump. She speared a career-best in the javelin with a throw of 137-6 before securing the title with a time of 2:22.67 in the 800 meters.
Roehrig was competing in her second Thorpe Cup. She was eighth a year ago. The Thorpe Cup is a heptathlon and decathlon competition between the United States and Germany. The meet is named after 1912 Olympic champion Jim Thorpe.
