Day five began with a scrumptious breakfast courtesy of chefs Bill and Frida. This delectable assortment consisted of the ever-fantastic zone pancakes, eggs, an array of hand cut fruit, our team favorite, oatmeal, and last but not least zone French toast. We feel very blessed to have Bill and Frida involved with the team again this year because they contribute in so many ways.

We had an hour between breakfast and our first session of practice. Some of the girls chose to have a dance party, others chose to catch up on sleep, but most of the girls decided to get their blisters taped. Nike supplied us with some awesome new court shoes, which we have decided look “retro” which in our vocabulary means wicked sweet. However, the minor price we have to pay for getting new court shoes are the blisters they cause. Good thing we are girls, and fashion always comes first.

The first session of practice was “low impact,” meaning there was absolutely no jumping or attacking. The coaching staff decided that by having a “low impact” practice we would be fresher for the afternoon session, allowing us to compete at a higher level. The majority of the session was spent on serve receive and defense. While we were having a less strenuous practice, the coaching staff was working up quite the sweat, hitting hundreds of balls at us. After we finished working on defense, we moved to a competition drill of three-on-three. The only way to score during this drill was setting, so you can imagine how ecstatic the three setters were.

The second session was spent primarily in competition drills, which are our absolute favorite. We started out these drills with a game of three before two. This drill is focused on counter attack, or our side out game. The side that is receiving the serve must score three points before the opposing team scores two. All of the girls looked on top of their game during this drill and it ended up being very competitive. Once we finished the three before two game, we moved onto position verse position hitting. This is when a specific position such as the right side, competes head-to-head with a right side on the opposing team. The only way to score points is for the right side to get a kill either from the front or back row. Once we finished our afternoon session we had a half-hour of physical training with Coach Wy, and then it was time for dinner! I am encouraged by our performance so far, the morale is high and I’m anticipating a strong upcoming season.
