Minnesota Ranked No. 11 in Preseason Poll

The Minnesota volleyball team was ranked No. 11 in the 2009 AVCA Preseason Top 25 according to announcement on Tuesday, Aug. 18. The Golden Gophers received 904 points in the preseason poll.

Minnesota has been ranked No. 11 or higher in the preseason poll five times since 2003. The Golden Gophers were ranked No. 6 in the 2003 preseason poll, No. 5 in 2004, No. 6 in 2005 and No. 9 in 2007.

The Golden Gophers finished No. 14 in last year's final poll, and were ranked all 16 weeks of the poll in 2008.

Minnesota was one of five Big Ten teams to be ranked in the top 25. The Golden Gophers joined by No. 1 Penn State, No. 10 Illinois, No. 16 Michigan and No. 19 Purdue. Wisconsin and Michigan State received 43 and nine votes respectively.

Heading into the season, Minnesota is slated to face five non-conference teams that are currently in the top 25. The Golden Gophers will face No. 22 Kansas State (Aug. 28) and No. 3 Nebraska (Aug. 29) in the AVCA Showcase. Minnesota will face No. 13 Iowa State in the Diet Coke Classic on Sept. 5, No. 4 Washington in the Tampa Twice Tournament on Sept. 11 and No. 14 Oregon in the Pioneer Classic on Sept. 18.
