What Gopher Fans Were Saying...

Today’s Gameday Preview at the Golden Gophers’ TCF Bank Stadium was the first chance for Minnesota fans to see a gem of a football facility and to celebrate the return of football to campus. Here is what some Maroon & Gold faithful had to say:

Maxine from New Ulm:
“I’m impressed with the stadium so far and the Victory Walk was a neat tradition to see. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of parking.”

Nancy from New Ulm:
“I’m just an avid football fan who is excited to get back to outdoor football.”

Lois Maturi (wife of Athletics Director Joel Maturi):
“Words cannot express the awesomeness of this stadium. Driving here today, it all just brought tears to my eyes. I’m so proud of Joel, President Bruininks and really everyone who had a part of making this a reality.”

Jay from Minnetonka (a U of M grad of the Carlson School):
“I got chills up my spine as I drove up Oak Street and saw ‘Minnesota’ spelled out on the seats in the stadium.”

Joe from Lake Elmo (an alum and a season ticketholder since 1989):
“The stadium makes you proud to be an alum. I missed out on this experience as a student so it’s fun to get football back on campus.”

Kate (a U of M grad and a Gopher swimmer from 2002-06):
“This is all really exciting. I’ve never been much of a football fan, but all this is making me one. It’s so easy to get involved now as a student and having a stadium on campus seems more personal. I wish we could have had this when I was going to school here.”

Tim from Cross Lake (a season ticketholder since he was 16 years old):
“It’s about time (football is back on campus). Earlier today some cheerleaders came by and we said, ‘welcome home.’ I can’t wait to get inside the stadium. I’m looking forward to us having a great home-field advantage.”

George from Roseville (a ’62 grad):
“I’ve been coming to Gopher games since I was a student here. We spent a lot of days tailgating by the Dome. It’s great to be tailgating here by our nice new stadium.”

John from Shoreview (a fan tailgating who grilled and shared some great buffalo sliders – thanks guys!):
“What a perfect day, nice and warm. We’ve met a lot of great people out here tailgating today.”

Michael and Charles (both 13 and 8th graders from Chaska who I met looking to trade a beverage for some ketchup and mustard for their hot dogs – OK, their dad forgot and gave the kids a beer to trade):
Michael on being a future Gopher, “Could be.”
Charles on the Gophers, “It’s going to be a great season. Decker is my favorite.”

Julia (a U of M grad and a mother of small children):
“I’m excited to have my two kids grow up coming to football games here.”

Becky (a First Transit supervisor working with bus shuttle from St. Paul):
“Things have gone very well. The shuttles have run every five minutes and are standing-room only. People seem to be having fun and are excited about the new stadium. Today has been a good practice run for us.”

Meghan from Bloomington (a junior at the U of M):
“I’ve been coming to Gopher football games since I was 2 years old. I’m excited about this new stadium. I think it will do a lot for our football team and school spirit. It’s great that the students have their own entrance to the stadium.”

Jim from Medina:
“I have mixed feelings. I remember moving to the Dome and am anxious to what this new stadium will bring.”

Marcia from New Brighton (a season ticketholder for 40 years – the tickets have been in the family for over 80 years):
“This is beautiful! I like it!”

Bruce from Rochester and son Paul, a U of M medical school grad (checking out their season tickets in the second to last row of second deck:
“These are great seats! We had end zone seats in row 24 at the Dome, which weren’t bad seats, but these seats have such a wonderful view of the field.”

Jim from Apple Valley (a season ticketholder):
“I am just amazed. This stadium is unbelievable. I can’t wait for the season to begin. Go Gophers!”
