Minnesota Defeats George Mason

The 13th-ranked Golden Gophers defeated George Mason in three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-14 at the Recreation & Athletic Complex on Monday, Aug. 31.

Minnesota was led by junior Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) who hit a career-best .588 (10-0-17), had 10 kills, two service aces and five blocks. Junior outside hitter Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) hit .450 (11-2-20) with 11 kills, four digs and two service aces.

Senior setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had 25 assists and nine digs, while Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) finished with three kills, nine digs and tied a career-high with five assists.

Brianna Haugen (Minneapolis, Minn.), Jess Menden (Shakopee, Minn.) and Mia Tabberson (Muncie, Ind.) all made their Golden Gopher debuts tonight. Haugen had a kill and two blocks, Tabberson finished with five assists and one dig, and Menden had one dig. Katherine Harms (St. Michael-Albertville, Minn.) also had her first career kill for Minnesota.

The Golden Gophers outhit George Mason .456 to .060. Minnesota's .456 hitting percentage was its highest since Sept. 16, 2005 when it hit .527 against Campbell. The Golden Gophers also outblocked the Patriots 9.0-to-2.0, and had 36 digs to 23 for George Mason.

Minnesota fell behind 2-0 in the first set, but responded with eight straight points, three of which came on blocks by Gibbemeyer, to take an 8-2 lead. The Patriots cut the led to 8-6, but the Golden Gophers scored eight of the next nine points to take a 16-9 lead on a service ace by Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie, Minn.).

The Golden Gophers pushed the lead to 21-11 on a kill by Cowles. Minnesota made it set point on a kill by Wilson to make it 24-13 and scored the next point to claim the first set 25-13.

Minnesota outhit George Mason .231 to -.069, and had 11 kills to five for the Patriots. Cowles and Dieter each had four kills in the set, while Gibbemeyer had two kills and four blocks.

In the second set, Minnesota jumped out to an 11-5 lead on a Gibbemeyer kill. The Golden Gophers pushed the lead to 16-9 on a kill by Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.). Minnesota pushed the lead to 19-11 when Tabitha Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) delivered a solo block and then teamed with Gibbemeyer on a block.

With the score at 21-14, Gibbemeyer delivered consecutive service aces and the Golden Gophers pushed it to set point at 24-14. After George Mason fought off set point, Dieter delivered a kill to claim the second set 25-15.

Minnesota outhit George Mason .400 to .069. Each team had 10 kills, but the Golden Gophers had three service aces and three blocks in the set. Gibbemeyer had five kills in seven swings and two service aces.

In the third set, Minnesota hit an astounding .773 (17-0-22) and limited George Mason to a .192 percentage (9-4-26). Dieter had six kills in eight swings in the set, while Love had three kills in as many swings in the set.

George Mason was led by Holly Goode who had nine kills, five digs and two blocks, while Fernanda Bartels had 20 assists and six digs.
