Minnesota Heads to Tampa Twice Tournament

The Minnesota volleyball team will face No. 3 Washington and South Florida in the Tampa Twice Tournament. The Golden Gophers will face Washington on Friday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. (CT) and host South Florida on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. (CT) with both matches taking place at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Minnesota's matchup with Washington will feature a rematch from the 2003 NCAA Regional Final at Long Beach in which the Golden Gophers qualified for the Final Four in school history. In that match, the Golden Gophers lost the first set 30-19, before winning the next two 32-30 and 33-31. Washington sent it to a fifth set with a 30-25 victory in the fourth set. Minnesota ended up winning 15-9 in the fifth set to punch its ticket to the Final Four.

Golden Gopher senior setter Taylor Carico will face Washington for the seventh time in her career. Carico faced the Huskies six times as a member of USC. She had her best match on Nov. 16, 2007 when USC battled back from a 2-0 deficit to win in five sets. In that match Carico, had 13 kills in 18 swings, and collected 70 assists. She has averaged 12.21 aps against Washington in the six meetings.

Washington is led by Jill Collymore who is averaging 3.22 kps and 2.89 dps. Becky Perry is also averaging 3.25 kps and 0.88 blps, while Kindra Carlson has 2.93 kps and 0.87 dps. Jenna Haglund leads the team in assists at 8.43 aps, and is averaging 1.78 dps. Tamari Miyashiro leads the team with 4.33 dps. Washington has outhit its opponents .337 to .069 on the season. The Huskies enter the tournament with a 6-0 record, and have outhit their opponents .337 to .069.

South Florida enters the week with a 5-0 overall record. Last week, the Bulls defeated Winthrop and Florida Atlantic in a home tournament. South Florida is led by Marcela Gurgel who is averaging 3.71 kps, 2.29 dps and 0.59 blps. Former Golden Gopher Pamela Luiz is averaging 2.29 kps, 0.94 dps and 0.65 blps, while Allie Boaz is also averaging 2.29 kps and blps. Janice Rivera leads the team in digs with 3.71 dps. The Bulls have outhit their opposition .288 to .088.

Minnesota enters the week with a 6-1 overall record after winning the Diet Coke Classic last week. The Golden Gophers are 2-1 against ranked opposition with wins over No. 12 Iowa State and No. 23 Kansas State, along with a loss to No. 3 Nebraska. Minnesota is led by Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) who is averaging 3.75 kps and 2.50 dps. Junior Lauren Gibbemeyer is also averaging 2.92 kps, 1.50 blps, 1.08 dps and is hitting .400. Setter Taylor Carico is averaging 8.96 dps, 2.52 dps and 0.61 blps. Senior Christine Tan leads the team with 3.92 dps.

The other matches in the Tampa Twice Tournament will feature No. 4 Florida against South Florida on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. (CT) and No. 3 Washington against No. 4 Florida on Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. (CT).
