Minnesota Falls to No. 3 Washington

The Minnesota volleyball team (6-2) lost to No. 3 Washington (7-0) in three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 at the Sun Dome at the Tampa Twice Tournament on Friday, Sept. 11.
Minnesota was led by senior Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) who had 10 kills, hit .333 (10-4-18), and collected five digs and a solo block. Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) had 10 kills and four digs, while Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) had a match-high five blocks, five kills and the only Gopher service ace.
Christine Tan had a team-high 16 digs, including nine in the last set. Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) finished with 18 assists, five digs, two blocks and two kills, while freshman Mia Tabberson (Muncie, Ind.) had 11 assists and two digs in the final set.
Washington outhit Minnesota .239 to .144, and had 43 kills to 36 for the Golden Gophers. Minnesota outblocked the Huskies 6.0-to-4.0, and both teams finished with 42 digs. Washington also had five service aces to one for the Golden Gophers.
In the first set with the score tied at 1-1, Washington went on a 6-0 run to take control at 7-1. The Golden Gophers cut the lead to 12-8 after a kill by Love. Washington pushed its lead out to a five points at 17-12, but Minnesota scored four of the next five points and trimmed the Huskies' lead to 18-16 on consecutive kills by Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.).
Washington pushed its lead back to out to five points at 23-18. Wilson answered with a solo block to make it 23-19. The Huskies made it set point at 24-19, but the Golden Gophers answered with consecutive points and made it 24-21 when Carico and Gibbemeyer combined on a block. The Huskies finished out the set on the next point.
