Minnesota Defeats South Florida

The Minnesota volleyball team (7-2) defeated South Florida (5-2) in three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-10 at the Sun Dome at Tampa Twice Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12.
Minnesota was led by Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) who had 13 kills, four blocks and hit .565 (13-0-23). Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) had a match-high 18 digs and three assists on the night. Freshman Mia Tabberson (Muncie, Ind.) finished with 26 assists, four digs, three kills and two blocks.
Junior Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) hit .500 (6-0-12) with six kills and four blocks, while Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) had a career-high seven blocks. Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) also had six kills and six blocks, while Tabitha Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) had six kills, three digs and two blocks.
Minnesota outhit South Florida .453 to .066, and had 37 kills to 32. The Golden Gophers also outblocked the Bulls 15.0-to-3.0. On the night, Minnesota had only three attack errors as a team, while South Florida finished with 25.
Wilson was named to the All-Tournament team, along with Washington's Jill Collymore, Airial Salvo and Florida's Kristy Jaeckel.
South Florida jumped out a 6-4 lead, and led 8-7 before Wilson and Filho combined on a block followed by Dieter and Gibbemeyer combining on a block to give Minnesota its first lead of the set at 9-8. With the score tied 10, the Golden Gophers went on a 9-0 run to take a 19-10 lead. Dieter had a kill and a pair of service aces, while Gibbemeyer also had a pair of kills during the run.
With the score at 21-12, Minnesota ripped off the final four points of the set. Wilson delivered a kill to make it 23-12, and Tabberson made it set point with a service aces. The Golden Gophers won the set on a South Florida attack error.
Minnesota outhit South Florida .276 to .029 in the first set, and had 10 kills to eight in the set. Dieter and Gibbemeyer each had three kills, while Filho had three blocks.
The Golden Gophers jumped out to an 8-6 lead after a kill by Wilson, but South Florida answered with consecutive points to tie it at eight. Dieter answered with three straight kills, and the Bulls had consecutive attack errors to give Minnesota a 13-8 lead.
After consecutive points by South Florida, Wilson delivered a kill followed by a combined block Tabberson and Gibbmeyer to make it 15-10. Gibbemeyer followed with a kill, and the Golden Gophers scored the next point to make it 17-10. With the score at 20-13, Love delivered consecutive kills to put Minnesota ahead 22-13. Dieter and Filho combined on a block to make it set point at 24-16. South Florida scored consecutive points to make it 24-18, but the Golden Gophers closed out the set at 25-18.
Minnesota outhit South Florida .500 to .222 in the second set, and had just one attack error to eight for the Bulls.

South Florida was led by Alli Arbogast who hit .500 (6-1-10) with six kills. Marcela Gurgel had eight kills and eight digs, but hit -.091 for the night. Janice Rivera finished with a team-high 13 digs.
Minnesota will be back in action when it travels to Denver for the Pioneer Classic. The Golden Gophers will face No. 12 Oregon on Friday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. (CT). Minnesota will then face Georgia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. (CT) and Denver at 8:30 p.m. (CT). All three matches can be heard live in the Gold Zone.
