Former track/cross country All-American Lori Townsend Monaghan was among eight former Gopher standouts representing seven different sports gained induction into the "M" Club Hall of Fame on Thurs., Sept. 17 at the TCF Bank Stadium DQ Club Room.
Over 350 people attended the event, which was hosted by Gopher football radio play-by-play broadcaster Dave Lee and Gopher women's basketball radio analyst Lynette Sjoquist. The evening began with a one-hour social and the program lasted about an hour and a half.
Inductees were men's hockey players Mike Antonovich and Aaron Broten, men's swimming and diving coach Dennis Dale, men's pole vaulter Jack DeField, wrestler Dale Hanson, softball player Judy Knight, women's cross country and track and field athlete Lori Townsend Monaghan, wrestler Brian Peterson and football player Andy Uram.
Each inductee or their family representative was presented their award by a current Gopher student athlete. Presenters were men's hockey players Mike Carman and Patrick White, men's swimmer Alex Wold, track and field athletes Addison Demer and Gabriele Anderson, softball player Dannie Skrove, wrestler Brian Peterson and football player Jay Thomas.
The evening opened with the Minnesota Spirit Squad leading the crowd in the Minnesota Rouser followed by remarks from Athletic Director Joel Maturi. Jean Freeman, the president of the "M" Club, gave a greeting and introduced all of the "M" Club Hall of Fame members in attendance.
Lee and Sjoquist inducted DeField, Hanson and Uram, who are all deceased and were represented by family members. The university men's choral group followed with the singing of a medley of traditional Minnesota songs. Antonovich, Townsend Monaghan and Dale were then inducted before a dance performance by the spirit squad.
Another highlight of the night was the recognition of the 50-year letterwinners. About a dozen letterwinners from the 1959 freshman class were in attendance to receive a diamond-studded lapel noting their accomplishment. George Adzick, president of the "M" Club, presented the awards and also acknowledged all of the Gopher letterwinners in attendance.
Knight and Broten were then introduced to complete the inductions. Each inductee was recognized in a video tribute and interviewed by Lee or Sjoquist. The event was capped by a singing of the alma mater by the men's chorus.
