Minnesota Defeats Georgia Tech

The Minnesota volleyball team (8-3) defeated Georgia Tech (7-4) in four sets by scores of 25-19, 25-17, 25-27, 25-18 in the Pioneer Classic on Saturday, Sept. 12.

With the win, the Golden Gophers moved to 1-1 in the Pioneer Classic. Georgia Tech finished 0-2 in the Pioneer Classic, while Oregon went 2-0. Denver is 1-1 going into tonight's matchup against Minnesota.

The Golden Gophers were led by Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) who had 19 kills, hit .417 (19-4-36) and finished with nine digs. Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) hit a career-high .722 (13-0-18) with 13 kills and seven blocks. Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) tallied a career-high hitting percentage for a second straight match, as she hit .533 (10-2-15) with 10 kills and three blocks.

Tabitha Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) had eight kills, three digs and two blocks, while Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) had a team-high 12 digs and one service ace. Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) also had 29 assists, five digs and three blocks.

As team, Minnesota outhit Georgia Tech .342 (54-16-111) to .136 (52-33-14). The Golden Gophers also outblocked the Yellow Jackets 10.0-to-5.0, and had 47 digs to 35 for Georgia Tech.

Minnesota fell behind 2-0 in the first set, but scored seven of the next 10 points and took a 7-5 lead on a kill by Love. The Golden Gophers maintained the three-point lead at 13-10 after a kill by Gibbemeyer. Georgia Tech cut the lead to 13-12, but Love answered with a kill and Tan followed with a service ace on the way to taking a 17-12 lead.

The Golden Gophers pushed their lead out to seven points at 20-13 after a kill by Dieter. Georgia Tech answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 20-18. Wilson halted the run with a kill to make it 21-18. After a Georgia Tech lead, Filho delivered a kill to make it 22-19. Gibbemeyer and Wilson combined on a block, and Gibbemeyer followed with a kill to make it set point at 24-19. Dieter put the set away at 25-19 with a kill.

Minnesota outhit Georgia Tech .444 (16-4-27) to .172 (10-5-29) in the first set, and had three blocks to two for the Yellow Jackets. Gibbemeyer had four kills in five swings, while Dieter had four kills in six swings. Love also had four kills in the set, while Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) had three blocks.

The Golden Gophers jumped out to a 6-5 lead in the second set, and scored six of the next seven points to push it out to 12-6. Georgia Tech cut the led to 12-7, but Minnesota scored four of the next points to move ahead 16-9 on a kill by Gibbemeyer. Gibbemeyer helped the Golden Gophers push their lead to 18-10 on a kill. Minnesota led by at least seven points the rest of the set, and made it set point at 24-16 on a kill by Katherine Harms (Albertville, Minn.). Two points later, the Golden Gophers claimed the set 25-17 on a service error by the Yellow Jackets.

Minnesota outhit Georgia Tech .421 (9-1-19) to .000 (12-12-31) in the second set. Individually, Dieter led the way with three kills in the set.

The third set featured 15 ties and eight lead changes. Minnesota appeared close to finishing the match in three sets when it took a 22-21 lead on a Yellow Jacket service error. Georgia Tech answered with the next two points to take a 23-22 lead. Dieter followed with a kill and Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) delivered a service ace to make it match point at 24-23.

Georgia Tech fought off match point with a kill by Monique Mean, but Gibbemeyer delivered a kill to make it match point at 25-24. The Yellow Jackets answered with three straight kills by Chrissy DeMichellis to claim the third set 27-25.

The Yellow Jackets outhit the Golden Gophers .308 (17-5-39) to .303 (17-7-33), as each team collected 17 kills. Dieter led the way with six kills, while Love and Filho each had four.

Minnesota jumped out to an 11-9 lead in the fourth set on a kill by Dieter. Georgia Tech tied it at 11, but Gibbemeyer followed with a kill to help the Golden Gophers back to a 13-11 lead. Minnesota pushed the lead out to 17-14 on a kill by Filho. With the score at 18-15, the Golden Gophers scored consecutive points and took a 20-15 lead on a kill by Gibbemeyer. Georgia Tech cut the lead to 20-17, but Dieter responded with consecutive kills to make it 22-17.

Gibbemeyer followed with a kill and combined on a block with Carico to make it match point at 24-17. After the Yellow Jackets fought off match point, the Golden Gophers scored the next point to claim a four-set victory.

Georgia Tech was led by Mean who had 14 kills, four digs and three blocks, while Bailey Hunter had 13 kills. DeMichelis finished with 11 kills for the match. Setter Mary Ashley Tippins had 43 assists, four service aces and five digs, while Jordan McCullers had a match-high 17 digs.

Minnesota will wrap up action in the Pioneer Classic when it faces host Denver at 8:30 p.m. (CT).
