Minnesota Defeats Iowa in Three Sets

The ninth-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (11-3, 2-0) defeated Iowa (9-5, 1-1) in three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Minnesota was led by Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) who hit .565 (13-0-23) with 13 kills and five blocks. Over her last six matches, Gibbemeyer has hit .531 (73-4-130) with 3.48 kps and 1.52 blps. She has only committed four attack error in that stretch, had three matches with out an error and committed two or less errors in each of those six matches.

Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) collected 13 kills, 12 digs, three assists and two blocks on the night. It was the 12th time in 14 matches, Dieter has collected double-figure kills and it was her fifth double-double of the year.

Senior setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had 33 assists, nine digs and four kills on the night. Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) had 13 digs and two service aces, while Hailey Cowles finished with 12 service aces.

As a team, Minnesota outhit Iowa .300 (46-13-110) to .120 (30-16-117), and had 46 kills to 30 for the Hawkeyes. For a second straight night, the Golden Gophers did not give up a service ace. Minnesota also collected five in the match against the Hawkeyes. Minnesota also had seven blocks to four for Iowa. It was the 13th consecutive match that the Golden Gophers outblocked their opposition.

Minnesota fell behind 13-10 in the first set before going on a tear that saw it score 15 of the final 16 points in the set. Dieter got the run started with kill, and Gibbemeyer followed by sandwich kills around a combined block with Tabitha Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) that put the Golden Gophers ahead 14-13.

Following an Iowa timeout, Tan delivered a service ace and Love followed with a kill to complete a string of six straight points that made the score 16-13. The Hawkeyes cut the lead to 16-14 on a kill by Aimee Huffman. However, Gibbemeyer answered with back-to-back kills. Carico followed with a dump to deliver a kill that made it 19-14. Gibbemeyer came right back with consecutive kills to move the score to 21-14.

Dieter delivered a solo block, and Cowles followed with a service ace to make it 23-14. The Golden Gophers closed out the set with a kill by Dieter and back row kill by Cowles to win it 25-14. Along with scoring 15 of the final 16 points, Minnesota scored the final nine points of the set.

The Golden Gophers outhit Iowa .349 (18-3-43) to .171 (11-4-41), and had 18 kills to 11 for the Hawkeyes. Individually, Gibbemeyer led Minnesota with eight kills in 13 swings, and two blocks in the set.

Minnesota ran out to an 11-5 lead in the second set on a kill by Katherine Harms (Albertville, Minn.). Iowa answered with three straight points to cut the lead to 11-8. The Golden Gophers responded with four of the next five points, and moved ahead 15-9 on a kill by Dieter.

With the score at 17-12, Minnesota went on a 5-0 run punctuated by Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) combining on a block with Carico and delivered a kill to make it 22-12. Filho pushed it to set point at 24-14, and Dieter delivered the kill to give the Golden Gophers the second set 25-14.

Minnesota outhit Iowa .353 (16-4-34) to .111 (9-5-36) in the second set, and had 16 kills to nine for the Hawkeyes. Dieter led the Golden Gophers with five kills and seven digs in the set.

The Golden Gophers ran out to a 15-7 lead in the third set after Gibbemeyer and Harms combined on a block. Iowa scored three straight points to make it 15-10, but the Golden Gophers answered with six of the next seven points and took a 21-11 lead on a service ace by Dieter.

Iowa scored six of the next eight points to cut the lead to 23-17, but Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) delivered a kill to make it match point. After the Hawkeyes fought off match point, Dieter delivered a kill to give Minnesota the three-set victory.

The Hawkeyes were led by Megan Schipper who had seven kills and 11 digs, while Katie Kennedy also finished with seven kills. Christina Meiser also had 11 digs for the match.

Minnesota will be back in action when it travels to Purdue on Friday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. (CT). The Golden Gophers will also head to Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 12 p.m. (CT). Both matches can be heard live on gophersports.com.
