Minnesota Defeats George Washington

The Minnesota volleyball team (5-1) defeated George Washington (3-2) in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 in the Diet Coke Classic on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Minnesota was led by junior Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) who hit .382 (16-3-34) had 16 kills, 10 digs and a service ace. Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) also had nine kills and five blocks in the match. Senior setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) hit .714 (6-1-7), had six kills, six digs and 25 assists in two sets of action.
Senior Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) had 11 digs, tied a career-high with five assists and had three kills. Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) also had a season-high three service aces and seven digs, while Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie, Minn.) 10 digs, three assists and one service ace. In the third set, freshman setter Mia Tabberson (Muncie, Ind.) came in and had 12 assists. two digs and two blocks.
Minnesota outhit George Washington .333 to .112, and had 49 kills to 32 for the Colonials. The Golden Gophers also outblocked George Washington 8.0-to-2.0, and had 51 digs to 41 for the Colonials.
Minnesota jumped out to a 12-7 lead on a kill by Gibbemeyer. With the score at 14-9, Carico and Dieter delivered back-to-back kills to make it 16-9. George Washington scored five of the next seven points to cut the lead to 18-14. The Golden Gophers scored three of the next four times and moved ahead 21-15 on a kill by Dieter. After George Washington cut the lead to 22-17, Minnesota scored three straight points and closed out the set on back-to-back kills by Carico.
The Golden Gophers outhit the Colonials .289 to .093 in the first set, and had 19 kills to 10. Individually, Dieter led the way with eight kills in the set. Going back to the third set of the Auburn match, Dieter had 16 kills and hit .577 (16-1-26) over the course of the two sets.
In the second set, the score was tied at 10 before Filho and Dieter had consecutive kills and Tan delivered a service ace to make it 13-10. With the score at 14-12, Wilson and Carico delivered back-to-back kills to make it 16-12. George Washington cut the lead to 16-14, but Carico sandwiched a pair of kills around a Dieter kill to make it 19-14.
The Colonials cut the lead to 20-17, but Love delivered a kill, followed by a block by Carico and Filho to make it 22-17. Dieter gave Minnesota set point at 24-18, and after George Washington fought off a set point Filho delivered a kill to give the Golden Gophers the second set 25-19.
