Freshman Tabitha Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, along with Penn State's Darcy Dorton according to an announcement by the conference office on Monday, Sept. 7.
Love averaged 2.62 kps, 0.88 blps and hit .265 in a week where Minnesota went 5-0 and claimed the Diet Coke Classic Tournament. Against Navy, Love had 10 kills, a service ace, four digs and hit .265.
She had her best match of the week in the Diet Coke Classic Championship match against No. 12 Iowa State. In that match, Love had a career-high 18 kills and a career-best six blocks in the four-set victory over the Cyclones.
Love enters the week average 2.23 kps and 0.69 blps in seven matches. The freshman of the week honors make Minnesota and Penn State are the only two teams in the Big Ten to have a player collect Big Ten weekly honors in each of the first two weeks of the season.
Minnesota will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 11 when faces No. 3 Washington at 6 p.m. (CT) in the Tampa Twice Tournament. The Golden Gophers will then face host South Florida on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. (CT). Both matches can be heard live in the Gold Zone.
