Senior All-American Alicia Rue opened the season with an NCAA automatic qualifying height of 13 feet, 11 1/2 inches in the pole vault as the Golden Gophers hosted the Northwest Open. Rue is the defending Big Ten champion and the NCAA runner-up in the event.

Teammate junior Samantha Sonnenberg gave the Minnesota a 1-2 punch in the pole vault. Sonnenberg started her season with a second-place showing with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 13-3 1/2, just 3/4 of an inch off her career high.

The Gophers also posted 1-2 finishes in the weight throw and the 200-meter dash. Sophomore DeAnne Hahn won the weight with an effort of 60 feet, 4 inches, bettering her career-best by nearly five feet and notching the fourth-best throw in school history. Redshirt freshman Caty Dongoske placed second with a throw of 50-4 1/2.

Sophomore Kylie Peterson captured the title in the 200-meter dash running a time of 25.48 seconds, edging teammate Nyoka Giles, who was clocked at 25.70.

“It was good to get the season going,” said Golden Gopher head coach Matt Bingle. “We graduated a huge senior class last year, but we also have a lot of young talent ready to step forward.”
